Here at the Cottage, a fresh-cut Christmas tree is a family favorite holiday tradition, but keeping it vibrant and fresh throughout the season can be a challenge. With a few simple tips and tricks, you can ensure your tree remains a stunning centerpiece in your home. From selecting the perfect tree to proper care and maintenance, I’ll show you my secrets to a long-lasting, festive tree.

Choosing the Perfect Tree
Big Al and I have been cutting trees down since I was pregnant with our first son. We carried on the tradition for about 17 years and then took a pause. The tradition was created with all of our close friends and their children. It was a yearly event we all looked forward to, and all our sons agree, so many great memories were made! Now that we have grandchildren we wanted to start the tradition again.

Choosing the perfect Christmas tree is the beginning to a festive holiday season! You can make a whole day out of cutting trees. From Christmas music, to sharing in the excitement of each person finding their tree, to a shared meal after, it’s a great memory making day full of tons of fun!
Whether you’re cutting your own down at a tree farm or choose the pre-cut route, a little care can go a long way in maintaining a fresh Christmas tree, all season long!

“I never thought it was such a bad little tree. It’s not bad at all, really. Maybe it just needs a little love.” – Linus Van Pelt – A Charlie Brown Christmas
Choosing the Freshest Tree at the Farm or Lot
Do you have a favorite type of tree? Here in the Mitten, we have access to all different types of varieties. I love a Fraser Fir and usually gravitate towards those. Regardless of the type of tree you pick, did you know there are things to look for when trying to find a fresh Christmas tree? Below is the checklist I use, when picking out our tree.

Fresh Tree Checklist – Cut Your Own

If you are going the pre-cut route make sure to choose a recently cut tree. You can ask the attendant when it was cut. The fresher the cut, the longer the tree will last. Also, check the storage conditions. The tree should be stored in a cool, shaded area. Lastly, inspect the trunk to make sure it is straight and free of any damage. The last thing you want is a crooked trunk!
Finding the Perfect Spot for Your Tree
This might not seem like a big deal, especially if you followed the tips for choosing your tree above, but I promise it is! Choosing a spot that avoids direct sunlight, and keeping your new cut Christmas tree away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, and vents is crucial. Doing so, will help keep your tree from drying out.
It’s important to make sure you have a sturdy tree stand that can accommodate the size of your tree. A well-built stand ensures your tree remains upright, preventing any accidents and spills. It should also hold enough water to keep your tree hydrated. This helps to maintain the tree’s freshness and prevents needles from dropping.
Watering Your Tree Like a Pro
In the hustle and bustle of everyday life and doing all things Christmas, this step is one that is easy to forget. At least in my world it is! I’m planning, shopping, wrapping, and not always thinking about watering the tree! However, watering your tree daily is so important. Here are some things to consider when it comes to watering your tree.
Tree Watering Tips

Pro Tips
Reduce Fire Risk: Use LED lights – they create less heat. Traditional incandescent lights generate a significant amount of heat, which can pose a fire hazard. LED lights, on the other hand, produce very little heat, making them much safer to use and less drying to your tree.
Also, to manage your tree lights effortlessly, consider using a smart plug. You can control them from your phone, ensuring they’re never left on, or on too long, which keeps your tree fresh by minimizing heat exposure.
