There’s the charm of one-of-a-kind treasures, the stories from vendors about forgotten pieces, and the simple joy of strolling through booths filled with unique items. Today I’m excited to share a peek into my recent vintage market trip, along with all my best tips to help you enjoy your own day of treasure hunting!

I’m a sentimental girl when it comes to items of the past. The feeling of seeing something from my past just tugs at my heart in the best way! Recently, I hit the road, with family and friends, to a large local vintage market. A day at a vintage market is always more than just shopping; it feels like a little adventure, a chance to find unique items and enjoy a wonderfully old-fashioned vibe.

This time, I was on the hunt for a couple of specific items and I’m happy to report that I found them!

How to Plan Ahead and Make the Most of Your Visit

You may be wondering how you can plan ahead when attending a vintage market. Is there such a thing? The answer is absolutely!

There are simple ways to plan ahead, and doing so can make your vintage market day so much smoother and more enjoyable. Having fun is the goal, right?! If the market has a website or social media page, check it out beforehand to see shopping hours, vendor lists, and special events.

If the vintage market you’re visiting offers early bird shopping hours, it’s often worth the small additional fee to get in before the general crowd. These early hours usually give you first pick of the most unique vintage finds, especially larger items like furniture or high-demand collectibles.

Vintage Market Shopping – Helpful Tips

  • Research Vendors: You can usually do this via social media or event pages. It helps you discover specific styles, items, or makers you don’t want to miss.
  • Make a Shopping List: Having a general idea of what your looking for helps, but be open to unexpected treasures! I love finding unexpected treasures!
  • Bring Room Measurements: If you’re shopping for furniture make sure to remember the measurements for the piece you need. This will avoid disappointment of an item not fitting your space.
  • Bring Cash: Some vendors may not take cards, so it’s best to have cash. Also, smaller vendors often prefer cash, and it can help you stick to a budget.
  • Pack Water and Snacks: Although there are typically plenty of food trucks (and ice cream trucks!), it’s nice to have your own water and snacks such as a granola bar. It will keep you energized until you stop for lunch.

Dressing for a Vintage Market: What to Wear & Why

Planning your outfit for the day may not seem like a big deal, but it really is. It’s important to check the weather and dress appropriately. The way you dress for the day can sometimes make a or break a good time! If it’s cool but sunny and you decide to skip the jacket, you might end up freezing and not enjoying yourself as much as you hoped.

Comfortable shoes are a must (think sneakers, rain boots, sloggers or cushy sandals), especially if the market is large or outdoors. If it rains days before or the day of, the ground will be soft and sometimes muddy.

Your Vintage Market Toolkit: Essential Things to Bring

There are a few things I always bring depending on what I am looking for. Consider it part of a vintage market checklist! Going prepared can make all the difference, especially when you start collecting treasures. You need something to carry all your goodies in!

One of the most helpful things you can bring is your own set of sturdy bags. Heavy-duty reusable grocery bags or a large canvas tote are perfect for carrying small to medium-sized items without relying on vendor packaging. A backpack with pockets can also come in handy to keep your hands free while browsing.

If you’re planning to shop for larger pieces like artwork, textiles, or even furniture, a wagon is a vintage market lifesaver. It’s practical and easy to maneuver. A wagon, one that easily collapses, will also save you from trying to juggle bulky finds. Having a few of these essentials on hand helps make your day smoother, more organized, and definitely more fun!

Something to Consider

Many markets will offer assistance for big-items you may purchase, such as staff with golf carts or designated helpers who can transport your purchases to your car or a pickup area at the market.

How to Spot Vintage Market Deals & What to Ask Vendors

If you are already familiar with the worth of specific pieces such as art, dishware, etc., then you probably already know what the price would look like. For those of you who don’t there are ways to strike deals and important questions to ask vendors.

Questions to Ask Vendors

  • Check for Quality Materials: Look for real wood, solid stitching, and well-made details. Good craftsmanship stands the test of time.
  • Examine Condition Carefully: Some wear and tear adds charm depending on the piece. However, water damage or missing parts will typically not be worth the money.
  • Know Your Prices: If you’re on the hunt for a specific item, do some research before you go. It will help you recognize a fair price.
  • Will Vendors Hold Items: If you purchase something large (like in my recent trip) you’ll want to ask the vendor if they will hold the item after you pay for it. That way you don’t have to carry it around or make a special trip to your car before you’re finished shopping.
  • Make an Offer: If you find an item and the price seems a little high, there is no harm in offering less. The worst they can say is no. Most times, they will haggle on price with you.
  • Bundle to Save: If you have your eye on several pieces from the same vendor, ask about a multi-item discount. Vendors are often happy to negotiate.
  • End of Sale Discounts: Often vendors will mark down their items on the last day, especially in the afternoon. Typically they aren’t eager to pack everything up and take it back home with them.

One last thing I will say about vintage market shopping. If you see something and it speaks to you, and you can afford it, buy it! I’m still kicking myself for not purchasing those two stunning vintage ship paintings. I even pictured them with different frames and had a place in mind where I would hang them. Now the space is empty.

  2. It was such a great time Kim. I’m glad I could join the crew for the vintage market trip. I wish I would’ve read your blog before we went because I did not follow all of these rules and I almost froze my tail off, but luckily I had an extra jacket in the car. Also, I did not come with a list so I ended up being the biggest spender however…I did not have any regrets because I bought everything that I liked. ..unlike you ha ha .. Next year I will follow your handy tips and maybe you can be the big spender instead.

  3. It looked like a great time, Kim. Next weekend, I am heading to my annual trip to a vintage market. I got my ticket back in January. So many great things to find! I only wish my mother could still go with me. It would be our girls weekend for years.
