A New Year, A New You: Setting the Stage for Success

Each year, I have really good intentions on setting goals and dreams that I want to achieve. But how do we create a plan and make sure that our goals are realistic and achievable? Creating a vision board has helped me set myself up for success and I’ve used this method for the past several years. Of course, there are other ways to do it, too.

I also use a good calendar/planner to help keep me organized daily. Plus, I love crossing off completed tasks on my calendar. It give me a sense of accomplishment and reinforces having positive habits. A calendar/planner is a powerful tool for staying organized, minimizing stress, and ensuring you’re making consistent progress towards your goals!

By following some of my tips, you can set yourself up for a year of growth, accomplishment, and fulfillment.

Setting SMART Goals

Have you ever heard the term SMART goals? It’s a great framework for setting up your goals and aspirations for the new year. Each letter in SMART stands for a specific criterion and I’ve shared them with you below.

Once you have your SMART goals, make sure you keep them somewhere handy so you can reference them, frequently.

SMART Goals

  • Specific: Clearly define what you want to achieve. Avoid vague goals like “I want to be healthier.” Instead, specify your goal, such as “I want to lose 10 pounds by the end of March.”
  • Measurable: Set measurable targets to track your progress. For example, instead of “I want to read more,” set a goal like “I want to read 12 books this year.” I’ve done this in years past and I would make checkmark, next to that goal, each time I read a book. The visual makes you realize you are attaining your goal.
  • Achievable: Make sure your goals are realistic and you can attain them. Don’t set yourself up for failure by aiming too high. I’ve done this in the past and who wants to feel disappointed in themselves?
  • Relevant: Make sure your goals align with your overall objectives and values.
  • Time-bound: Set a specific deadline for your goals. I believe this is so important! By doing so, it creates a sense of urgency and helps you stay focused.

Creating a Vision Board: Visualizing Your Dreams

Creating an annual vision board is a fun and helpful DIY. It helps you see your dreams on paper, or on poster board in my case! Creating a vision board doesn’t have to be expensive, either. I buy a poster board from the Dollar Store and cut it to my desired size. Most of you will have everything you need to make your own DIY vision board.

However, in order to start making your vision board, you’ll need to spend some time reflecting and brainstorming on what it is you want to achieve for the year. After you have your ideas together you’re ready to begin! Below are some suggestions of supplies needed and tips so you can make your own vision board.

Be creative and make it your own! Afterall, this board is all about you.

Vision Board Supplies

  • Gather Your Board: A large poster board, corkboard, canvas, or even a digital board (like Pinterest or Canva)
  • Images & Decorative Elements: I use magazines for the most part. I have a magazine stash that I have collected over the last couple of years. You can also use newspapers, personal photos, inspirational quotes, fabric scraps, stickers, colored markers or pencils. I typically use two-sided tape to adhere anything to my board.
  • Arrange and Create: Once you have all your decorative items, play around with how you want to arrange them.
  • Display and Review: Place your vision board where you’ll see it every day. If not, out of sight, out of mind. Affirming your goals weekly is a good habit to get into. I have mine hanging next to my desk. I put it in a decorative frame that I thrifted. Are you surprised?

Prioritizing Your Goals: Focus on What Matters Most

Life is busy! It’s impossible to focus on all your goals at once. Therefore, it’s important that you prioritize what is most important to you. What goal do you want to accomplish most?

There is something called the 80/20 rule. Have you ever heard of it? It suggests that 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts. Mind blowing, right?

This means you need to figure out what the most important 20% of tasks are that will have the greatest impact on achieving your goals and objectives. Whether it’s increasing your income, improving your productivity, or building stronger relationships, that 20% will largely affect your overall results.

Staying Motivated: Keeping Your Goal Achieving Momentum

At the beginning of the year, it’s easy to feel motivated and ready to roar! But as time moves on, and goals you thought you would have achieved already have not been attained, you can become discouraged and unmotivated. I’ve been there and I know for certain, I am not alone!

Below are some tips to keep you motivated to keep your goal achieving momentum in place!

Stay Motivated!

  • Find a Support System: Share your goals with friends, family, or a mentor. Their encouragement and accountability can be invaluable.
  • Celebrate Your Wins: No matter how small, celebrate your progress! Give yourself credit. It will help to keep you motivated.
  • Stay Inspired: Read books or listen to relevant podcasts. This tip helps so much with my business goals.
  • Focus on “Why”: When things don’t seem to be going your way, remind yourself the why behind wanting to achieve your goals.

Embracing the Journey: A Year of Growth and Discovery

Take that first step, however small, towards your goals and personal growth. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the victories, and most importantly, enjoy the ride!
