There’s something about fall that makes me want to slow down, light a candle, and gather friends around good books and better conversation. Who am I kidding? “For as long as she could remember, she had thought that autumn air went well with books, that the two both somehow belonged with blankets, comfortable armchairs, and big cups of coffee or tea.” – Katarina Bivald

Setting the Scene: Simple Cottage Decor Touches
For this fall book club gathering you don’t really need to purchase a thing as far as your decor. Unless you’d like a few real pumpkins and cornstalks for your porch to welcome your guests! You know my motto, use what you have when you can! A cozy throw, a few candles, maybe some faux pumpkins or floral stems is plenty. That’s really all it takes to set a warm and inviting scene.
What to Serve (Without Overdoing It!)
A full-on spread isn’t necessary to make your guests feel welcome. My fall book club spread will be simple this season. A pretty charcuterie board, some warm apple cider or yummy spiced tea, and a classic fall baked good are more than enough to set that cozy autumn tone.
Looking for a good recipe to make for your fall book club? Try my Nutty Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies or my Peach Muffin Recipe with Cinnamon Crumble Topping. Both are perfect for an autumn dessert!
My Go-To Tip
Keep your charcuterie board simple. A few cheeses, some crackers, nuts, and whatever fruit is in season will work great! No need to buy anything special; odds are you already have some items on hand.
A Few Hosting Tips
Hosting doesn’t have to mean stressing over every little detail. Keep your guest list small, send a simple reminder a few days before, (an email or creating a text group works great), and enjoy the evening. It can be a little imperfect. The goal isn’t a perfect table, it’s good conversation, good company, a good book, and enjoying that cozy fall atmosphere together.
- Connection matters more than a perfect table
- Set out drinks and snacks buffet-style so your not tied to the kitchen
- Pick a discussion starter ahead of time to keep the conversation flowing
Discussion Starters That Keep Things Easy
I like to have an agenda when it comes to the discussing the book of the month. Below are a few items to think about it when preparing.
- What surprised you most about the book?
- Which character did you relate to, and why?
- Would you recommend this one to a friend?
One of my favorite things about picking up a new book for book club is flipping to the back to see if there’s a reading group guide included. Did you ever notice them? Many books have them and these discussion questions make it easier to host, diving into character choices, plot twists and themes everyone loves to talk about. They are a game changer for the hostess! Some even include snack and drink ideas to make your gathering feel extra special!
Fall Book Club Picks Your Group Will Love
Autumn is the best time to restart your book club after pausing for the summer. That’s exactly what I’m doing. Choosing the right book is the secret to a memorable book club gathering, especially during the cozy fall months. Whether your group loves deep character studies, inviting settings, or thought-provoking plot twists, these four picks offer plenty to discuss. Here are the titles I’m excited to feature for our upcoming fall gatherings!
| The Second Life of Mirielle West by Amanda Skenandore | Historical Fiction | Set in the 1920s, this moving story of resilience offers incredible discussion points about community, identity, and inner strength. |
| Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt | Heartwarming Bestseller | A witty, deeply moving story about unlikely connections and second chances—a reader favorite that sparks endless conversation. |
| Falling for Peachtree Bluff by Kristy Woodson Harvey | Cozy Small-Town / Southern Fiction | Set during crisp autumn in a charming coastal town, it delves into sisterhood, second chances, and strong family ties. |
| The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery | Classic / Cozy & Nostalgic | A heartwarming, nature-rich classic about living life on your own terms—deeply nostalgic, comforting, and cozy. |
