Why These Easy Flower Sugar Cookies Are Perfect for Grandkids

If you grew up in “my era” there was a lot of flower power going on! My granddaughters love picking flowers, saving them, drawing them, etc. I think maybe they would have loved the era! So, I thought why not make some flowers they can eat!

These easy flower sugar cookies are the perfect treat to make with your littles. They’re simple enough to make and lets them be hands on creative. The best part, decorating the centers with colorful sprinkles. Who doesn’t love some sprinkles in their life?!

Get Ready to Bloom: Simple Ingredients for Sweet Success

Trust me when I say, there are no fancy ingredients to make these special summertime cookies. With just a few of your pantry staples and a few helping hands, they’ll be made and eaten in no time! Below is a list of all the ingredients you’ll need.

Ingredients for Cookie Magic

Petal Perfect: Cutting and Decorating Your Flower Cookies

First things first, mix your dough as directed on the package. I will advise cutting the butter into slices, as it makes mixing much easier. I was brave and let my granddaughter crack the egg on the side of the bowl. They’ve got to learn sometime, right?!

If you like, you can separate the dough and use food color to make it more fun. I used a drop of red in one batch to make the cookies a light shade of pink. Surprisingly, the girls liked them the original color so I left most of them without any color.

Once the dough was mixed, I rolled it into small balls and pressed them flat on a cutting mat until they were about ¼ inch thick. My grands then took turns pressing the flower-shaped cookie cutter into the dough. I used a 1½ inch cookie cutter and it made the perfect size cookies.

Cooking Tip

If you use a bigger cookie cutter, I would increase the thickness of the dough. If you don’t, the cookie will spread out while baking and it won’t look like a flower when it comes out.

After you press the cookie cutter into the dough, I placed the smallest flower cookie cutter in the center and let the kids fill it with some sprinkles. Don’t fill this to the top, as the sprinkles will spread out all over the cookie when you remove it. The goal is just to create a center for the flower, it doesn’t make another flower pattern. It just keeps their little hands from dropping sprinkles everywhere.

Once you’ve cut out your flower shapes, gently remove the excess dough from around the cookie cutter. This will keep the edges of the cookie nice and clean. Then, carefully lift the both cookie cutter straight up to reveal your flower cookie with sprinkles in the center. If the dough sticks a bit, a butter knife can help loosen it without damaging the shape of the cookie.

After you’ve cut all your cookies out and added those fun sprinkles, you’re ready to bake! Line them up on a baking sheet and follow the baking directions on your Betty Crocker sugar cookie package.

After baking, I transferred the cookies to a cooling rack.

The Sweet Reward: Baking and Enjoying Your Creations

In my opinion, the biggest reward is being together. Yes, the cookies are cute. Yes, they were easy and fun to make, and yes, they were definitely yummy! However, the cuteness of the cookies and the simple baking process, wouldn’t have mattered unless those sweet little hands (btw…while wearing their princess dresses) were there doing it with me.

These flower power cookies tasted WAY better because I created the cookies with them. That’s a gift that can’t be replaced and the biggest baking lesson to take away with, today.
