Bringing Autumn Charm to Your Front Door

Like most people, I change my wreaths out seasonally, but swapping out that often can get expensive quickly. That’s why I’m a big believer in the power of a good DIY project. Making your own wreath is fun and a great way to be creative. It’s also a fantastic way to be budget-friendly and create a one of a kind piece!

What You’ll Need to Make Your Wreath

As with most of my DIY projects, I use a limited amount of supplies. If you are a crafter by nature, you’ll probably have many of the items in your craft closet. I was lucky enough to snag some yarn, fall supplies, thread, and fabric when Joann’s was going out of business. My craft closet is now fully stocked!

Below is my list of everything you’ll need!

How to Make Pom Poms for Your Wreath

When making pom poms, I’ve found that using a pom pom maker is the easiest way to create them. Sure, there are other ways, but I’m telling you, this is by far the easiest. Just follow the instructions on the package to wind your yarn evenly around the tool. Once you’ve finished winding, cut the yarn loops first, and then use a separate piece of yarn to tie a tight knot around the middle. I always use a double knot to ensure my pom pom stays in place.

I used four different size pom pom makers and made several of each color. Keep in mind, you are only using pom poms on half of the wreath form. I used 32 pom poms in various sizes for this wreath. The amount of each color you use, is totally up to you. If you like more orange than brown or gold, then make more orange pom poms. I only made light yellow pom poms in the smallest size. The color stood out and worked well to fill in gaps or smaller spaces.

Adding Pumpkins, Pom Poms and Ribbon to Your Wreath

Adding the pumpkins to your wreath form is the most satisfying part of the project. You are literally watching your wreath come to life! Grab your hot glue gun and start arranging your pom poms.

I started with the largest size pom pom first, and then began clustering them close together. Once all the pom poms were secure, I detached my faux pumpkins off the stems and hot glued them in place. You can play with the different size pumpkins and their placement to create a design that’s uniquely yours.

My Craft Tip

My faux pumpkins were on floral stems. I had to use wire cutters to remove them from the stem. However, you can typically purchase individual faux pumpkins that come multiple sizes in a bag.

After you have your pom poms and pumpkins in place, add a pretty fall bow. I made mine from wired edge ribbon I had, but you can also buy a ready-made ribbon and use that instead.

Tips for Hanging and Styling Your Autumn Wreath

Once your beautiful fall wreath is complete, the final step is to style it. When hanging your autumn wreath, you can use a simple over-the-door hanger or use a command hook for a clean look. I have also used fishing line to hang my wreaths, over the years. It’s a great way to hang and your wreath looks suspended.

To create a full seasonal display, consider pairing your wreath on the porch with pumpkins, hay bales, cornstalks and a layered doormat. These are simple decor tips that will elevate your home for the perfect fall display!
