Mitten Moments – Goodbye July, Hello August!

Happy Sunday, friends! It’s time for another Mitten Moments, those bits of joy I’ve found and some that I’ve shared. From simple everyday blessings to a few special finds, I hope these little snapshots from my week bring a smile, spark some inspiration, or simply give you a moment to slow down and savor the good.

Who else is having trouble believing it’s already August! July was so busy for me and my family. We celebrated two birthdays, the 4th of July, a trip up north, and a fly-in fishing trip to Canada for Big Al. The end of July brought our first harvest of beans and some red tomatoes, too. Yum! Now, August is here and I’m trying to soak up all the summer I can, before all things fall seem to creep in!

“The first week of August hangs at the very top of the summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning.” – Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting

My Personal Moments

  • I’ve been gardening for many years. I’m not a master gardener by any means. I’ve been trying different things and learning new techniques as I plant. I know some basics when it comes to companion planting and I’ve been trying to learn more about it, this year. The more you know, the better the garden, right? Anyway, while trying to educate myself I learned a new term. “Three Sisters” is a Native American method of growing corn, beans, and squash together. Have you ever heard of it? Corn gives the beans a tall stalk to climb, beans fix nitrogen in the soil, feeding the corn and squash, Squash shades the ground, keeping weeds down and moisture in. Amazing!
  • My newest book find is She Didn’t See It Coming by Shari Lapena. It’s about a woman who vanishes from her home in the middle of the day—her car, phone, and laptop untouched. As her family and neighbors search for answers, secrets begin to surface and suspicion grows. This fast-paced domestic thriller is full of twists, tension, and the unsettling truth that even the people closest to us might be hiding something.

  • Have you ever grown lantana? It’s so colorful and grows like crazy. In certain areas of the United States (zones 9-11) it’s a perennial. Here in the Mitten, I plant in my pots each year. If you’ve never tried your hand at planting it, I highly suggest it!
