Transform your Thanksgiving table into a rustic masterpiece with a stunning centerpiece crafted from nature. By foraging for summer’s leftover hydrangeas, you can create a unique and eye-catching display that celebrates the beauty of autumn. In this post, I’ll guide you through the process of finding the perfect hydrangeas, arranging them in a charming pie tin or vessel of your choice. Perfect for keeping your centerpiece before and through the Thanksgiving holiday.

The oldest form of theater is the dinner table. It’s got five or six people, new show every night, same players. Good ensemble; the people have worked together a lot. – Michael J. Fox
Finding the Perfect Fall Hydrangeas: A Foraging Guide
Autumn is painted with beautiful colors and it’s also the perfect time to forage items for a pretty fall floral arrangement. For this Thanksgiving arrangement I used dried hydrangeas. I didn’t dry the hydrangeas myself, rather I cut them from the bush after they were all dried up.
My neighbor was kind enough to let me cut some of her larger hydrangeas. Mine were just too small. If you don’t have your own or a nice neighbor like me, below are some places where you can forage your own. A friendly reminder, always ask for permission before foraging on private property.

Centerpiece Supplies
This Thanksgiving centerpiece is beyond easy to put together and the supply list is minimal. The only thing you may have to purchase is the pheasant feathers.
- Vessel
- Scotch tape
- Hydrangeas
- Pheasant feathers
- Small branches (optional)
Transforming Fall’s Bounty: Creating a Rustic Thanksgiving Centerpiece
Once you’ve gathered your foraged hydrangeas, it’s time to create your lovely home decor centerpiece. For my vessel, I used this amazing John Derian metal pie tin. It’s a double pie carrier and the perfect height to arrange my florals in.
Step 1: Prepare the Tin
For my centerpiece, I used a little DIY flower arranging secret. Using a roll of scotch tape, I created a checkerboard pattern on the top of the tin. This technique helps hold the hydrangeas in place and assists in elevating the hydrangeas creating a more dynamic display.
Once you get your checkboard in place you’re ready to add your hydrangeas.

Step 2: Arrange the Flowers
The next step is to cut the stems on your flowers. The length will be determined by the vessel you choose to use. If it’s shallow, like my pie tin, you will need to cut the hydrangeas shorter, but don’t cut them too short. You can always trim down if you need to.

Start by placing the hydrangeas in the center of the tin and working your way around filling in the gaps. Once all my flowers were in place I added some additional decorative elements. I ordered some inexpensive pheasant feathers and also brought some twigs in from my yard, placing them in the arrangement.

A Foraged Feast for the Eyes
By following these simple steps, you can create a stunning arrangement that reflects the beauty of the season. This rustic DIY Thanksgiving decor will elevate your table. Share your creations with me. I’d love to see what you create!
By the way, I’m not hosting Thanksgiving this year. However, you better believe I’ll be disassembling my centerpiece, cleaning it up, and taking my pies in my carrier. After all, I need to be styling when I come through the door with the desserts!
Happy Thanksgiving!
