Spring Time At The Cottage

Hello!

Welcome to my Cottage in the Mitten!

Today, I am so honored to be joining some of my very talented blogging friends for the Bloggers Best Spring Home Tours, hosted by Kelly of The Tattered Pew and Mansa of This is Simplicite. It has been an exciting week seeing so many beautiful homes! If you are coming over from my friend Yvonne of Stonegable, wasn’t her spring decor absolutely beautiful?

This is my Cottage in the Mitten! Otherwise fondly known as the “one room schoolhouse”.

When you enter the house you are in the living room, dining room and kitchen, all at the same time. That’s right! It’s one big room. It’s cozy and great for entertaining.

If this is your first time here, let me say I am so glad you found your way! My name is Kim. I am married, have three grown sons, a daughter-in-law and an amazing granddaughter. I am a native Michigander and I love all things home decor, DIY, painted furniture, vintage items, hot tea and Jesus.

Oh, I almost forgot….I make blankets for a cause! You can read all about that in my previous blog post, The Journey.

Enough about me! Come on in and let me show you around!

I love spring and all the sights, sounds and smells it brings.

When decorating, I do love neutrals but my heart belongs to color. I love color! Spring reminds me of cheerful colors like pink and yellow. These are the colors I choose to use this season.

So cheerful, right?

I love to decorate outside as well as inside. The wreath on my door was one that I already had. I am all about using what you have. You don’t always need to buy new. Repurpose and mix with new to get the look you want, is my motto.

As soon as I saw this cute bunny, I knew I had to have it. The door mat fit with my pink theme so I picked that up, too!

This is the table just inside my front door. It’s a narrow table so something simple works best here. The faux tulips were a great find on-line and they look so natural. The sweet bunny holding the yellow egg came in yellow and pink. I couldn’t decide, so of course, I bought them both.

Because my house is small and there is really no division between the rooms, I have to make sure my vignettes coordinate. Someday, I will try and get the whole room in one photo to show you.

But for now, here is the corner of the room that leads down my back hall.

I have a ladder that I love to use for my blankets. I changed the blankets out for spring, with some pastels and a floral quilt. I’ve had the floral quilt for years but it still looks like new. Switching out the blankets is an easy change that anyone can make for any season or holiday. The other bonus, using what you have doesn’t cost a thing to decorate.

I used a hydrangea arrangement that I already had for the table in the hallway.

Oh, and look….there’s the other sweet bunny!

Before setting my table for Easter, I created a simple centerpiece that I could use for before and after the holiday. Since I have a stash of baskets downstairs in the storage room, I decided to grab one of those first.

I mean, doesn’t everyone have a stash?? I can’t be the only one!

First, I chose a rectangular basket for the table. Then, I used a simple table runner, a sphere, a blue vase and put some dainty off white faux flowers to put in it. I finished the space by replacing a decorative piece I had on the wall with a boxwood wreath and I love the way the boxwood looks!

Now, on to my favorite part!

If you are a regular here, then it’s no secret that I love a pretty table setting. I may or may not have an obsession with pretty dishes and glasses.

Anyone else with me on that?

One of my biggest suggestions on creating a pretty table is, if you are working with a budget, make sure you have a neutral set of dishes. That way you can dress your table up, with accessories, according to the season or occasion. It’s a super budget friendly way to go. As money allows, you can add to your dish collection.

Setting a special table is such a fun and creative process and it can make people who come to your home feel special.

Here is my table setting for Easter.

Remember, I told you l love color!

Everything on my table is something I had or something that was found at a bargain price. These cute Easter plates were so inexpensive. How could I resist? The pink glasses are some of my favorites, because they remind me of depression glass. I layered the napkins to give it a little something extra. The pink and yellow garland was a gift and it worked perfect!

The yellow and pink floral stems, in the pretty white ceramic pitcher add the perfect touch to the table.

Have you ever had a Fruit Loop cake? It was so yummy and it matched great!

Well, that’s it from my Cottage in the Mitten. Now make sure you stop by and see my friend Amber of Follow The Yellow Brick Home. You definitely won’t want to miss it!

I hope you enjoyed my spring home tour. I hope I have inspired you to get ready for spring. I hope you come visit again….the door is always open!

Peace and Blessings,

Kim
