The 3-Step Formula for Styling a Vintage Tray or Tabletop Vignette

Whether it’s the sideboards near my entryways or the kitchen table, styling a vignette can feel kind of like a puzzle. A fun puzzle nonetheless!

My 3-Step Formula for Styling a Vignette or Tabletop

Have you ever set down a vase, added a candle, stepped back, and thought, “Why does this just look like clutter?” If you have, you’re definitely not alone! Decorating small surfaces doesn’t take an interior design degree or a trip to a high-end home store (although, I love a trip to any home store!). Truth is, some of my favorite arrangements are created using vintage finds, books, and some of my everyday treasures. You’d be surprised at the amount of great pieces you already have sitting around your home.

To take the guesswork out of styling your own favorite small space, I’ve broken my styling process down into a 3-step formula that anyone can do.

Step 1: Style Height with Organic Elements

In the first step, you start with your tall anchor piece. A simple pitcher or large vase with branches or seasonal flowers works great. If you want to go another route you can use a large candlestick.

When I can, I like to use real flowers or branches. However, with so many great faux options available today, I use whatever is available in my home or garden. For example, a ceramic pitcher filled with fresh pink hydrangeas from my garden creates instant height in the summer tray below.

Step 2: Layer Texture and Warmth

Once you have your tall anchored piece in place, it’s time to bring the display to life with warmth and texture. This is where your vignette will turn from sparse to feeling lived in. The secret is to have contrast. Make sure to pair smooth surfaces like ceramic, glass, or polished wood with rich elements. Think woven baskets, raw wood trays, stacks of linen bound books, or natural accents like pinecones and dried botanicals. Next, add warm tones to your display. A pillar candle, vintage brass accents, or wood grain instantly grounds the space and creates that inviting, welcoming feeling.

Don’t overlook the power of soft textiles! Adding a table runner (my favorite option) or a woven placemat provides an instant foundation that softens hard surfaces. To take it a step further, try adding subtle fabric accents, like tying a simple ribbon around a vase, a candle holder, or a decorative object. It’s a quick, budget-friendly way to introduce color and cozy texture to your vignette.

Add Character with a Vintage Find or Stack of Books

I’m a book girl. In my opinion, there’s nothing better than curling up with a good book. I also love using books to decorate my home. Books make wonderful natural pedestals and they’re pretty! Resting items on top of books, like the brass candlesticks pictured below, is a great trick. It instantly elevates your decor pieces so they don’t get lost next to larger elements you may use. From there, layer in pieces that tell a story. Pairing books with your favorite plant, thrifted find, or a treasured family piece makes your home feel special and uniquely yours!

When decorating for a specific holiday or time of year, use books with themed titles (like winter, Christmas, or gardening books) or covers in matching color palettes. It’s a subtle trick that ties your whole vignette together seamlessly!
