Vintage: of old, recognized, and enduring interest, importance, or quality : Classic.
Some people love vintage items and some do not. I happen to fall into the love category. Whether you call them retro, old, or vintage, they definitely have a certain “feel” to them.
I have a soft spot for many vintage things. I love old books, especially the ones I read as a child. I had the Trixie Belden mystery series as a young girl. When my mother sold her house, sadly, she sold my collection at her garage sale. From 2003-2006 Random House revamped the series but only made 17 out of 39 books. They had new updated covers, but the original interior artwork remained. I collected the first seven and have been on the hunt to purchase and finish the set. It has proven to be a very hard task. However, the hunt is worth it, because when I hold one of those books and I open the pages, it gives me that “feeling”. That same feeling I had as a young girl reading it for the first time.
I love painting furniture and making it feel and look like new. How many of you have an old piece of furniture that you treasure or maybe one that you have repurposed into something new?
If you have been following me for awhile, you won’t be surprised by the next item. Another one of my favorites things is fabric. I love to sew and make blankets for a cause. I also love new fabrics made to look vintage. Toile and florals are the best. I have a quilt my grandmother gave me when I was thirteen. It was made with every scrap of material she had, from pajamas to old shirts. Imagine nothing going to waste! I don’t know how old it was when she gave it to me, but I cherish the meaning of that old quilt and the fact that her hands passed it to mine.
I am a collector of dishes, old and new ones. Family dishes that sat at the table when I was a little girl, are now used at my table. I love mixing the old with the new. It makes for such a pretty table. When I was about five years old, I was given a china tea set for Christmas. I still have it. I get so excited thinking about the amazing tea parties me and my sweet grandbaby are going to have! I love a good tea party!
Old dishes, new memories.
I have wanted a vintage bike for a long time. Mr. Cottage recently surprised me with a bright blue one. Yes, it is new but looks retro. I love it….basket and all!
Did you ever have a basket on your bike? How about an old fashion “banana” seat?
I am an Alfred Hitchcock junkie and I love old classic movies, too. If it’s raining out when I’m watching them, that’s even better!
Do you like old movies?
The things that remind me of my past, the ones that have special memories, are the ones I treasure. How many times have you thought about something you had as a child or something you had in years past?
Have you ever wished you had kept some of them?
I know I have for sure!
How many treasures are waiting to be made, found at an antique store, estate sale, thrift shop, a family home, or a summer market?
The answer…..so many!
Often, I think we can become fixed on having things that are new. Why not try purchasing something old and make it new to you. Like the old saying goes, “Someone’s trash is another person’s treasure.”
Someday, I hope my blankets become vintage to someone.
I hope they give someone that “feeling” many years after they have been received.
I hope the story of why it was made and the cause it helped support, is carried down for many seasons.
Peace and Blessings,
