Unlock the Power of Reading: Your Guide to a Fulfilling Habit

When I was young, reading was one of my favorite pastimes. Spending the day picking out new books at the library was a day well spent! As I got older, reading seem to take the back burner to other more important things in my life. When my sons were young, I made an effort to bring books back into my daily or weekly routine, and I’m so glad I did! Today, I want to share some tools and strategies you need to cultivate a consistent and deeply satisfying reading habit.

Discovering Your Reading Preferences

Building a truly fulfilling reading habit starts with understanding what sparks your interest. Not all books are created equal, and what captivates one reader might bore another. For instance, I love a good murder mystery, a home decor book or a period drama. However, you will not find me picking up a science fiction novel. I’m sure there are plenty of great ones out there, just not my cup of tea! Taking the time to explore your reading preferences is like curating a personal library tailored just for you!

Reading tips to consider

  • Genre Exploration: If you’re unsure what you really enjoy, experiment with different genres: fiction (mystery, fantasy, romance, etc.), non-fiction (biography, history, science, etc.), poetry, graphic novels.
  • Ways to Read: Consider physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks. Each offers a unique reading experience. I personally enjoy holding a book in my hand.
  • Mood and Motivation: Consider what you’re looking for in a reading experience: relaxation, entertainment, knowledge, inspiration.
  • Finding Recommendations: Explore online book communities, read reviews, and ask for recommendations from friends or librarians. Bookstores are another great resource.

Setting Realistic Reading Goals

Reading is a wonderful hobby, so set realistic reading goals for yourself. It’s important to focus on creating goals that align with your current lifestyle and available time. Start small, perhaps with a goal of reading for 15 minutes a day or finishing one book a month. My goal this year is to read 15 books. Why 15? It just seemed like an attainable goal and one I would look forward to doing. If you set the bar too high for yourself, you will become discouraged and may not end up reading at all.

Creating a Reading-Friendly Lifestyle

What does a reading-friendly lifestyle mean? It means being intentional about carving out a block of time or a space to encourage your reading. This might mean designing a cozy reading nook, carrying a book with you wherever you go, or even setting aside specific blocks of time dedicated to reading. I typically make time to read first thing in the morning or before bed. By making small, consistent changes to your habits and surroundings, you can transform your lifestyle into one that naturally supports and nurtures your love for reading.

Some of my books are well worn and that’s ok! I’ve passed them so that others can enjoy them, too. Remember, the bindings don’t have to look perfect for you to delight in them!

Minimizing Distractions

Distractions, we all have them, right? They can be the enemy of a deep and satisfying conversations and a good reading experience. To truly immerse yourself in a book, you’ll need to create a space and time free from interruptions. Below are some of my suggestions, that I use on a daily basis.

Minimize Your Distractions!

  • Silence Your Devices: Turn off notifications, put your phone on “Do Not Disturb,” or leave it in another room. It can be hard to do, but totally worth the reward!
  • Use Noise-Canceling Tools: Consider headphones or earplugs to block out noise.
  • Limit Screen Time Before Reading: I find this one is the most important for me. Avoid scrolling or watching TV right before picking up a book, to allow your mind to settle.
  • Create a Dedicated Space: Designate a quiet area specifically for reading, free from clutter and interruptions.

Finding the Perfect Time and Place to Read

As I mentioned before, I like to start and end my day reading. I’ve learned to be disciplined about it and look forward to those quiet times in my day. Sometimes, I read in bed and other times I find myself in a cozy corner I’ve created in my room. Finding the perfect time and place to read is a personal preference and one you have to intentionally design for yourself. Experiment with different settings – a quiet corner, your favorite coffee shop, or even your commute – to discover where you feel most at ease.

Don’t underestimate the power of a dedicated reading nook. A comfortable chair, good lighting, and a shelf or small table of your favorite books can transform any space into a sanctuary for reading.

Tracking Your Progress and Staying Motivated

For some people, tracking your reading progress helps in making you feel like you are accomplishing your goal. I make a vision board every January and I always include the amount of books I want to read for the year. When I finishing reading a book, I head to my vision board and write it down. It definitely helps me stay motivated and I always look forward to what my next read will be!
