All the Feelings of Fall

When talking about making the transition from summer to fall, I don’t mean a full weekend overhaul or pulling out every pumpkin decoration you own. However, I do like a pumpkin or two! Believe it or not, you can do all your decorating in about an hour. The secret? Focus on the feeling of fall. It’s about warmth, texture, warm lighting options, and a slower pace.

Think about what you love most about this season. That’s the energy I’m creating today. Not a cluttered, themed look, but a space that feels like fall.

So grab your favorite mug, pour yourself something warm, and let’s get your home ready for fall in 60 minutes flat. Trust me, by the time you’re done, you’ll be craving a cozy night in with a good book and a blanket. Ready, friends? Let’s go!

Create a Cozy Front Door

Your front door sets the tone for your entire home, making it the perfect place to start your fall transition. Hanging a seasonal wreath, whether crafted from dried hydrangeas, autumn foilage or woven grasses, it instantly wraps your entryway in cozy charm. If you have a wreath you’ve used before but want it to look different from previous years, add a new ribbon for an instant update!

Swap Your Throw Pillows

This is hands down the fastest and easiest way to change the entire feel of the room. Swap out a few, and you’ve instantly shifted the color palette. Grab a few affordable covers and change them for the autumn season. Below are some good fall options to look for.

Quick Pillow Cover Swaps

  • Velvet Pillow Covers: Rich fall hues in rust, olive green, dark blue, and shades of gold work perfectly.
  • Chunky Knits: Always a cozy favorite!
  • Plaid or Buffalo Check: Mix and matching different patterns with similar colors is a great option. Gives your home a collected and cozy feel.
  • Woven Neutral Covers: Cream, beige, or oatmeal work year-round
  • Vintage Floral or Botanical Prints: Use deep moodier colors.

I keep a small tote of seasonal pillow covers in my decor closet. When the seasons change, I spend a few minutes swapping covers, and my whole living room feels brand new. It’s budget-friendly, easy, and makes a huge impact.

My Pro Tip

Buy covers, not new decorative pillows. They cost less, take up almost no storage space, and you can swap them out seasonally in just a matter of minutes.

Swap Your Lighting for Instant Warmth

Lighting is such a big part of making your space feel cozy for fall. Summer is all about bright, airy spaces with a lot of natural light. As the days get shorter and the sun sets earlier, we crave warm and comforting spaces. The good news? You can change the lighting in your space in just a few minutes and with little effort.

Start with your light bulbs. If you’re using the white daylight bulbs, swap them out for the warm-toned bulbs. This one small change can make a dramatic difference. Your space will feel softer and more inviting in an instant.

Next, think about where your primary light is coming from. Overhead lights can feel too bright and harsh, especially in the evening. Instead, rely on table lamps, floor lamps, and sconces to create areas of warm, gentle light. Place a lamp on a side table next to your favorite sitting area, add one to a console table in the entryway, or you can even tuck a small lamp on a bookshelf. The goal is to create layered lighting that feels soft and intentional.

My new favorite lighting trick that I absolutely love are rechargeable, battery-operated lamps and sconces. Let me tell you, these are a total game changer if you want the look of wall lighting without hiring an electrician. I used them in my DIY Bedroom for Granddaughters & Guests and I couldn’t be happier with them. My granddaughters have loved the wall sconces too, as they can change them colors when using them for nightlights.

Last, don’t forget the candles! What’s not to love about candles? For a homey vibe, I burn them all year long and I love mixing in battery-operated flameless candlesThis is the easiest, most affordable way to add that instant cozy feel. Look for scents in apple, vanilla, cedar and cinnamon. You can see my new seasonal favorite HERE.

Layer in Cozy Textures

Fall is all about texture. When the temperatures start to drop we gravitate towards softer and heavier materials. The fastest way to transition your home from summer to fall is to swap out those light breezy fabrics for warm, chunky textures.

Start with your throws. Pack away those thin summer blankets and replace with your favorite family quilts, knit or crocheted blankets, faux fur, wool blends, and chunky throws. Drape them over your favorite chair, couch, or along the end of your bed.

Here’s a fun trick! Add in a few woven baskets. They add natural texture, provide great storage for blankets and throws, then instantly make a room feel more grounded and organic.

Add a Touch of Nature with Real or Faux Stems

This is one of my favorite ways to decorate. I really enjoy foraging for stems, florals and branches. It’s a great past time on a beautiful fall day. It’s budget-friendly and they look amazing in your favorite vase or vessel. I also have quite a collection of faux stems I’ve gathered over the years. Whatever you decide, you can’t go wrong with either option. I recently purchased this Better Homes and Gardens Vase with Fall Leaves and I’m so glad I did! It’s beautiful!

Real Stems

  • Dried hydrangeas: These hold their color beautifully and look gorgeous in a pottery vase.
  • Eucalyptus: Fresh or dried, it adds a soft, calming scent and a muted green tone that pairs perfectly with fall.
  • Golden Rod: Tall golden-yellow plumes are the quintessential fall flower and the perfect pop of color.
  • Pampas grass: Tall, fluffy, and neutral—it adds height and texture without being fussy.
  • Branches with fall leaves: Snip a few from your yard for an instant, zero-cost arrangement.
  • Hydrangeas: Dry them and drop them in a vase or dough bowl for free, stunning floral decor that will last for months. You can learn how I dry hydrangeas HERE.

Faux Stems (for a forever option)

  • Faux eucalyptus: Looks so real and lasts forever.
  • Faux dried palm leaves: Adds a boho, relaxed vibe.
  • Faux berries or branches: Small red or orange berries tucked into a vase add a subtle fall pop without being too “themed.”
  • Faux olive branches: Elegant, neutral, and perfect year-round.
  • Faux magnolia leaves: Glossy, dark green, and stunning on their own or mixed with other stems.

Transitioning Decor – Frequently Asked Questions

Follow the same principles! Swap out a summer door mat for a neutral or plaid one, add a potted mum or two, and place a cozy throw over a porch chair. It’s quick and makes a quick first impression.

Of course! Even just a couple swaps can make your space feel refreshed and more seasonal.

Absolutely not! Most of these items you already own, like pillow covers, throws, lamps and even natural elements from your yard.

Yes! Choose durable fabrics and keep candles out of reach. Natural elements like pinecones and acorns are pet-friendly, and washable throw blankets are your best friend.

Savor the Season

I hope I’ve inspired you to get creative in your home! Transitioning your home for autumn doesn’t mean you have to pack away every summer memory or spend hours completely redecorating. By simply swapping your throw pillows, leaning into warmer lighting, layering cozy textures, and bringing a bit of nature inside, you can completely change the mood of your space in under an hour.

Now, pour yourself a warm cup of cider (or tea in my case!), light a yummy cinnamom candle, and take a moment to savor the wonderful, beautiful season ahead!
