Gathering Grace: The Table – Where Faith and Family Come Together

There is something so special about the table. It doesn’t have to be fancy and it doesn’t have to match. The meal doesn’t have to be extravagant. The table can be a clean slate. But something extraordinary happens when you gather there with your people. Meals are shared. Stories are told. Tears fall and laughter gets loud. Memories and decisions are made. The table is more than a piece of furniture and grace doesn’t mean you have to be perfect to earn a seat there. You are welcomed as you are.

The people you share the table with help shape you. They’re the ones who you make memories with, laugh with, and sometimes share tears with.

The table is one of the most significant places in your home and one of the most overlooked. In this month’s Gathering Grace post, discover the deeper meaning behind the family table, and simple ways to gather more grace and meaning around your own.

I’m Kim, and I believe beauty and grace can be found in the ordinary moments of everyday life. Through faith, gratitude, and a little slowing down, these posts are my heart poured out — written to encourage you, point you back to God, and help you find grace right where you are.

It’s Just a Table — Or Is It?

Sometimes, I think we stop noticing the magic of this ordinary piece of furniture. Maybe it doesn’t seem special because the wood is worn or the chairs have seen better days. Whether they are worn and weathered, it should never keep us from the table and take away our memories and the beauty that happens there. It’s not just a table. It’s an anchor for so much more!

When I look at my table, I remember all the holidays and birthdays celebrated, and the deep, important conversations with family and friends that have taken place around it. They are snapshots in my mind.

When I look at my table, I’m excited for what’s to come!

she has set up its seven pillars.
She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine;
she has also set her table.”- Proverbs 9:1-2

Why We Take the Table for Granted

I can think of many reasons we take our table for granted. For one, we’re busy people, right? Those busy schedules can lead us to drive-through meals, distraction and sometimes being too busy to eat. The table becomes a place to pile things as we run in and out, rather than a place to stop and gather. Trust me, I’ve lived that kind of busy season.

When our sons were young, sports, music lessons, youth group, and all the other things kids are involved in kept us busy. However, no matter how busy we were, we always managed to eat dinner together. It may have been later than normal on some days, but we did it. We gathered at the table, we shared our day, our highs and our lows. Important time. Intentional time.

Things that keep us from the table

  • The table literally gets buried. It becomes our landing spot for backpacks, mail, computers and sometimes laundry. We stop seeing it as a gathering spot and see it as a dumping surface.
  • Screentime has stolen our seats. Even when we sit down phones and devices pull us away from quality time together at the table.
  • We save the table for special occasions. The good dishes come out at the holidays but I believe a plain old Tuesday night deserves setting too!
  • Life gets busy and the table becomes the first thing forgotten. Drive-throughs, trays in front of the television, and eating in the car on the go have quietly replaced time around the table.

Gathering Grace Tip

If your evenings are just too hectic and full to sit around the table together, what about an early breakfast instead? You can set the table the night before, wake up just a few minutes earlier, and start the day together. Gathering doesn’t have a preferred time, it just needs an open seat.

The Table Holds It All

When you start to think about the table, maybe the one you had growing up, or the one you have now, it’s natural for memories to come flooding back. So many beautiful and occasionally hard moments happen at the table. The table holds them all. And in that holding is where I believe grace lives.

The table holds the celebrations. Birthdays with cake and candles. Holidays that spill into long lasting meals and memories. Anniversaries, graduations, and milestones celebrated around people you love. The ordinary week night that became an extraordinary memory.

“The table is a meeting place, a gathering ground, the source of sustenance and nourishment, festivity, safety, and satisfaction.” — Laurie Colwin

The table holds the hard moments. A diagnosis that needed a table full of love to bear it. The conversation that needed to happen and finally did.

The table holds the everyday. School assignments and bedtime snacks. Important documents are signed there. The morning coffee you drink before the day gets loud, and my favorite, Sunday morning breakfast or lunch after church.

The table holds the generations. Children who grew up and now have tables of their own. Recipes handed down within your family. Grandchildren who find their seat for the very first time. Stories told and retold until they become legendary.

Gathering Grace at Your Own Table

Gathering grace at your own table doesn’t have to be a big to do. It doesn’t require a perfectly set table (although I love a pretty tablesetting!) or a meal that took you all day long to prepare. Light a candle on an ordinary weeknight, use good dishes for no reason at all. Put all the phones in a basket and let the conversation fill the room instead.

In a world that moves so fast, it’s important to slow down and thank the One who provided it all. Say grace, even if it’s a few words of gratitude before you take the first bite. Thank God for the food on your table and the people who are around it.

These small intentional acts create a pattern, making us realize what has always been there to greet us. The table should feel like a safe place and one that can be full of grace if needed. Sometimes it just needs to be treated as one.

There’s Always Room at the Table

The table has always been more than a place to eat. It has been a wonderful witness to our lives, the beautiful ones and the hard ones. The people who gather at the table matter. The meals shared there matter. The conversations, the tears, the laughter and the prayers all matter. When I think about my own table I am overwhelmed by gratitude.

I pray this post moves you to see your table in the beautiful light it was always meant to hold in your home.

    1. Thanks for reminding me. I recently had to give up my grandparents table we had used for 30 years because it was questionable about holding up through big family meals anymore. My new table is pretty and I like it but it’s not quite like the old one. I guess maybe we need to give it more opportunities to bear the food, the tears, the joy and the occasional sewing project.

    2. Beautiful message Kim. I have so many great memories around our family table and also my grandmothers table.

  1. I love this! So many memories are shared at the table! I love the intentional time spent with the people we love!
