Why I Still Love Sending Handwritten Notes (And You Should Too!)

We currently live in a world of instant gratifaction. Instant texts, phone calls and constant notifications that vie for our attention. However, there is something still so incredibly sacred about a piece of mail that doesn’t arrive as a bill or junk. I love to write, and for me, the simple task of sitting down with a beautiful piece of stationery or a card and my favorite pen is the perfect pause in my busy day. I consider it a deliberate form of connection. Yes, digital communication is undeniably convenient, but it can never quite replicate the warmth, intention, and joy of opening a handwritten note.

Today, I’m sharing why I still love the art of a handwritten note, the history behind them, and how you can bring a little more snail mail magic into your life and others.

The Beautiful History of Pen and Paper

Long before our days were instant answers and messaging, communication was an art form. It required time, effort, and a little bit of anticipation. For many centuries the handwritten letter was the bridge to loved ones and friends that lived miles away. Historically, it was all about the texture of the paper, ornate wax seals and the elegance of the penmanship that revealed your care and character. Now I don’t always use wax seals, however, when I sit down to pen and paper today, it’s so meaningful that I am carrying on a timeless traditon. In this fast-paced world, pulling out my writing supplies allows me to step back into a slower, more deliberate time in life. And who doesn’t like to occasionally slow down?

Spread a Little Joy: Who Needs a Note?

When my middle son was diagnosed with his brain tumor, I was amazed by the cards and letters he received. Letters and cards from elementary school teachers he previously had, friends and family. What a thoughful, uplifting joy they were, and to think each one took the time to gather the supplies, write the note and put a stamp on it. A beautiful gift!

A handwritten note or card doesn’t have to be an epic essay. If you aren’t sure where to start, the good news is there are no strict rules for snail mail! Think about the people in your life that might need a good pick-me-up. Some may be waiting for a little bit of sunshine. Look around your community. Chances are there is someone in your circle that could use a tangable reminder that they are thought of, worthy and valued!

I truly believe joy lives in the small things. A handwritten note is one of them. If that resonates with you, I think you’ll love the post I wrote about Finding Joy in Life’s Simple Pleasures. It’s a good one!

Stationery Essentials: Beautiful Supplies for Letter Writing

Part of the joy of handwritten notes is the beautiful supplies you can gather. You don’t need an overwhelming collection, but having a few pretty stationery essentials makes the ritual feel extra special. When it comes to paper or cards, keep a stash of various cards (birthday, get well, congratulations, etc.) and pretty floral stationery or a simple stationery that feels good to hold. Look for a pen that rolls effortlessly across the paper. I personally love a good gel pen and it makes writing more fun. Add some unique stamps from the post office and your supplies are ready for writing and sending!

Stationery Finds

  • Estate Sales & Antique Malls – This is my absolute favorite secret for finding truly unique stationery! Look through old desks and boxes for vintage, unused boxed stationery sets, beautifully aged postcards, and unique fountain pens. They add a layer of history and charm that you simply can’t buy brand new.
  • Dollar Tree & Dollar Stores – Never underestimate the power of a good budget-friendly find! Dollar Tree is a great place to stock up on simple, multi-packs of all-occassion cards. They even sell Hallmark cards for a dollar or two.
  • Rifle Paper Co. & Papier – If you want to treat yourself to something special or pesonalized, these are gorgeous options.
  • The United States Post Office – Don’t forget the final touch. Since you have to buy stamps anyway, skip the standard roll of flag stamps. Instead head to the post office and ask to see stamps from their current collections.
  • Your Own Craft Closet – Before you buy anything new to add to your collection, take a look at what you already have first. Leftover blank cards or past holiday cards can be used for your next note.

Handwritten Notes – Frequently Asked Questions

Keep it simple and friendly! You don’t have to write a novel. Share a fond memory, or the reason they were on your heart, or simply let them know you were thinking about them. I promise, it will be an instant spirit lifter for your recipient!

You don’t need perfect handwriting to send a beautiful note. Focus on neatness. Use a smooth-gliding gel pen that doesn’t smudge. You could also consider using a personal touch like a wax seal or pretty sticker on the seal of the envelope.

Your local post office is the best place to find beautiful commemorative stamps. You can also check places like etsy and ebay, however, you just have to make sure the total cents on vintage stamps equals today’s postage rate.

A Simple Habit with A Big Impact

At the end of the day, writing a handwritten note is less about the paper but more about being present. It’s a simple habit that ripples outward in beautiful ways. For you, it becomes a peaceful moment of time, practicing gratitude and unplugging from all the digital noise. For your recipient it becomes a sweet gesture of care and a physical gift. Unlike a text message, your note can’t be scrolled past and eventually deleted. Your paper filled kindness may be folded into a journal, bible, displayed on a table or saved in an heirloom box. By picking up a pen you are choosing to give someone a lasting piece of your time and heart.

Sending a note is one of the simplest ways to love people well. And it starts with just one. If you want to go even deeper on this idea, my post on Gratitude and Grace is a beautiful companion read.

So, tell me, friends! Who is the first person who came to your mind when you read this today? Find a quiet place, grab your paper and pen, and write them a note. You’ll be sending a little bit of sunshine and I bet you’ll be surprised how much joy it brings you both!

Happy writing!

P.S. For my local Michigan friends, if you are looking for a fun afternoon outing, head to a local boutique in one of our quaint cities. Rochester, Oxford, Grosse Pointe, Ferndale and Detroit are just a few places where you’ll find local boutiques or a weekend estate sale. You’d be amazed at the vintage stationery treasures and unique local cards waiting to be discovered right in our own backyard!
