The Big Book Blizzard: 7 Books to Melt the Winter Chill

Theo of Golden | Allen Levi

Theo of Golden is an uplifting debut novel by Allen Levi. Not my typical go-to type read, but it’s a beautifully written book and who couldn’t use a little uplifting now and then?

The book follows an elderly stranger named Theo who arrives in a small southern town called Golden. He embarks on a quiet mission to purchase 92 pencil portraits from a local coffee shop. Theo begins giving these artworks to their rightful owners, sparking deep conversations, forming transformative friendships with the residents he meets along the way. As he weaves himself into the community, the townspeople begin to wonder about Theo’s mysterious past and the true reason behind his extraordinary campaign of creative generosity.

The Housemaid | Freida McFadden

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden was a great read, along with the two following books in the series. This book is an addictive domestic thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last page. Millie’s desperate decision to work as a live-in maid for the wealthy Winchesters quickly unravels into a nightmare of psychological manipulation and shocking secrets. With it’s infamous mid-book twist, the story masterfully flips the narrative, forcing you to question each character’s motive. Definitely binge worthy!

If you enjoy the book, you should check out the recently made movie! I usually like the books better than the movie, but this time it was a tie!

Listen for the Lie | Amy Tintera

This next book is on my to read list for 2026. Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera is about Lucy Chase. After being found covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood five years ago, her memory is blank and her Texas hometown is convinced she’s a murderer. When a popular true-crime podcaster arrives to reinvestigate the case, Lucy is forced to confront the town’s hostility and her own fragmented past to finally uncover the truth. The search for answers becomes a dangerous quest to identify the real killer among a web of friends, family, and town secrets.

The Widow | John Grisham

In The Widow by John Grisham, follows a struggling small town lawyer Simon Latch who thinks his luck has finally changed when an elderly widow named Eleanor Barnett enters his office, claiming to have a secret $20 million fortune she wants to protect from her greedy stepsons. However, the windfall quickly turns into a nightmare when Eleanor dies under suspicious circumstances following a car accident, and Simon finds himself the prime suspect in her murder.

First Lie Wins | Ashley Elston

First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston is on my current list to read. It was just recently published and is a Reese Witherspoon selection. This novel is a crime thriller novel and is based on secrets and lies.

Evie Porter has everything a nice, a Southern girl could want. She has wonderful boyfriend, a house with a white picket fence and a garden, and a good group of friends. The only catch: Evie Porter doesn’t exist.

Don’t Let Him In | Lisa Jewell

Don’t Let Him In by Lisa Jewell is a explores the terrifying reality of a professional con artist. After her husband’s tragic death, Nina Swann is comforted by the arrival of her husband’s friend, Nick Radcliffe, a charming man claiming to be an old friend of her late husband. While Nina finds comfort in his kindness, her suspicious daughter Ash begins to dig into Nick’s polished facade, uncovering a trail of deception that leads to a woman named Martha who is living a separate life with the same man. As the three women’s lives collide, they discover a shocking, dark truth about the “perfect man’ they’ve let into their homes.

The Frozen River | Ariel Lawhon

The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon is based on a true story. It is set in Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion, declaring the death to be an accident, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own.
